Does free will exist? If so, in what context?
Does fate exist? If so, in what context?
These two questions
have been pondered and debated throughout time. My Guidance says they are both equally in play like two sides of a coin.
In fact, the very possibility of free will depends on the possibility of fate and vice versa. Remember in an earlier
Journal Pages we talked about the earth's primary program being duality? Well, this duality also applies
to free will and fate.
Think about it for a moment. Haven't
you ever felt like fate was having its way with you?
Comments like, "it was meant to be" or "it
was written in the stars" or "when your number's up, it's time to go" are all statements that we believe
fate is in play. We sense there is certain inevitability to many of the events in our lives.
Conversely, it feels as though we are always making free will choices moment to moment. Something as
simple as what you will eat for breakfast certainly feels like it must be a free will choice. Or choosing which job
offer to accept; certainly that is free will. But then there are events that happen wherein you can recount many insignificant
choices that all had to fall in place in order for the incident to occur. At that point you look back and ask yourself,
were even the insignificant choices fated?
Was it my destiny?
In 2001
I began writing my book, Hiring the Heavens. There was an intuitive certainty within me that this project was "mine to do".
I knew that I would write it, that it would be published, and that it would be successful. It was as if it
was my destiny - that on a soul level I was fulfilling a predetermined purpose. But that indicates fate.
Then it makes me look back at all the numerous events that led to the discovery of the Hiring the Heavens process.
For example, did I learn to dowse and heighten my intuition by free will choice or was that all part of the plan? Did
I become a Naturopath by free will choice or was that all part of the plan? Even the client that provided the pivotal
moment for me and ultimately the Hiring the Heavens concept, did that all occur through numerous chance free will choices
or was it all according to plan?
Is it in the stars?
I remember having
an astrological reading wherein the astrologer started by recapping what the previous year had been about for me. She
said, "I see that you had tremendous writing energy flowing in June...did you notice?" I responded by exclaiming,
"Yes! I did nothing BUT write for the entire month of June!"
So
the question becomes; did I write because I freely chose to or did I write because it was fated? One could argue both
ways. The questions go on and on. The fact is we sense the existence of both possibilities and reflect this in many
of our common phrases. We are told we are given free will by God but in the same breath we often refer to the unfolding
of events as God's will and therefore, predestined.
Fate and free will simultaneously
Ultimately this debate of free will and fate is one of those unsolvable mysteries that cannot be proved one way or
the other. I believe (of course with clarification from my Higher Guidance) that both fate and free will are equally
in effect, simultaneously, and that one cannot exist without the other. Both free will and fate are an integral component
of the duality of the universe. Therefore, I accept that my life is a constant play of free will choices and inevitable fate
in every moment - in ways that I cannot fully conceive.
I received clarification
of this idea when my Guidance explained that we are actually a trinity - that there are three parts of us playing simultaneously
which blend free will and fate in an inseparable dance of creation. How is this possible? We will delve into the
trinity at length in future CM Journal Pages.
